Development Update – November 2023

Hey folks,

It’s time for another update, although I haven’t been working quite as much on shaderpack stuffs as usual now that I’m also busy with university things again, which is why this is one of the shorter development updates.

KappaPT

I’ve continued to work on the rework and there has been another update in the last month, where I mostly focused on ironing out some quirks and issues caused by the new path-tracing implementations. In addition to that I have also updated a few more things to reach parity with the latest Kappa Shader release, namely the TAA implementation (the upscaling ability will follow shortly) and the way skylight behaved on fog and clouds. Another long overdue addition was the support for rain particles, now that I can actually render and apply them properly.

I am also looking into potentially adding optional reflective caustics, assuming they contribute enough to the lighting results to warrant the extra performance impact. Aside from that I will continue to focus on ironing out any current shortcomings while working towards parity with the latest Kappa Shader release, especially since I don’t have quite as much time to work on it as I used to, so focusing my efforts is probably the best choice.

Closing Words

As I’ve mentioned I am busy with university stuffs in the coming months, which means I just won’t be able to put as much time into my shaderpack projects as I used to, but I will try to keep a steady update pace regardless of that. Luckily I worked through the most complicated shortcomings of my packs in the past few months, so I can direct the time that I have towards the ongoing KappaPT rework, which takes far longer than I anticipated but I prefer doing it properly rather than rushing it as you probably know by now. In addition to that I’ve also been a bit sick for a while, though thankfully it’s mostly limited to coughing my vocal cords out and having an extremely sore throat, which is unpleasant and annoying but it could be worse.

Aside from that I also want to give the obvious big thanks to my supporters over on Patreon, your ongoing support is very much appreciated and I am very grateful for it as you already know by now.

That’s pretty much it for this month’s update, there hasn’t been as much new stuff in the last few months as I’d have liked, but that’s just life I guess. I’ll try to get back to a more regular pace as much as it reasonable and possible for me though :)
